「你想我說粵語還是英文?無所謂,講普通話都行!」

一句簡單的開場白,不但令現場氣氛突然變得輕鬆起來,更甚者,是在過程之中,我們這班陌生人,竟然能在最短時間內,感受中國人鮮有的熱情、從容和幽默。當然,還有躊躇滿志的自信和果斷。

中國人 + 威尼斯人 + 巴黎人,一起走在金沙城的金光大道上,可以有甚麼奇妙化學作用?看完這篇訪問,讀者定能親身感受!但在現場的筆者最能感受到的,是眼前這位澳門金沙中國集團首位新任總裁——王英偉博士,雅人深致,博學多才,絕—對—是—位—勁—人!

在過去 40 年,王英偉博士在香港的工商界一直位居要職。1975 年他從香港大學經濟系畢業後加入政府任職,17 年間晉升至工業署副署長,後來辭去政府工作投身商界,更從香港轉戰內地以及澳門,他的管理大智慧固然順手拈來,管理哲學也帶着點濃濃的東方式人情味,難得的是他又是藝術和表演藝術的愛好者。

王英偉博士的豐厚閱歷和藝術熱情,也隨着巴黎人綜合度假村的開幕,用他的左手魔術棒把澳門的度假文化變換出浪漫的法式體驗,而右手則指揮着集團中 27,000 名員工,為來自不同國家的遊客帶來非凡的娛樂、餐飲和購物體驗。

These past 40 years, Dr. Wong has established himself as one of Hong Kong’s movers and shakers. In 1975, after graduating from the University of Hong Kong with a degree in Economics, Dr. Wong joined the government. Within 17 years, he was promoted to Deputy Director of the Industry Department. He then left government for business, expanding his reach to the Mainland and Macau. A lover of the performing arts, Dr. Wong himself is performing a bit of magic. With the opening of The Parisian Macao, Sands China’s new integrated resort, he is conjuring up the romance of Paris while leading 27,000 employees.

創造體驗的魔法師

王英偉博士曾經在不同的地區、不同的行業中擔任管理高層,能夠晉身成為澳門首屈一指的國際品牌——澳門金沙中國集團總裁,實是華人中的第一人。他坦言沒有一個職位、一個範疇能像現在這個職位,為他帶來如此大的滿足感,同時又帶來如此大的挑戰。

「我現在負責的事情很能滿足我那喜歡玩、好客的性格和喜好藝術的興趣;而挑戰是來自綜合度假村的文化。那是一個多元跨界的行業,其中包括酒店、飲食、交通、會議、娛樂、表演藝術、地產項目等等,這樣一個集大成的集團,應該找甚麼人來做管理上的統帥呢?剛巧這些行業我全部都做過,所以這個總裁的角色就能發揮我的小宇宙。」

王英偉博士說起來信心十足,讓人也感到他跟這個總裁角色實在是絕配!

他以一個統計為例。去年一項調查顯示,澳門最多遊客遊覽的景點是大三巴,排第二則是在2007年開幕的威尼斯人;他期望、並相信第三名最受遊客歡迎的,將會是澳門巴黎人。

這份信心,除了是來自綜合度假村本身的浪漫吸引力,也在於這個綜合度假村為遊客帶來的周邊休閒設施和服務:各式刺激滑梯活動、水世界(Aqua World)、超過150間世界各國時尚與「實用奢華」(Affordable Luxury)的名店及餐廳;透過舒適的室內行人天橋,遊客更可以穿梭於毗鄰多個度假村的購物商場內超過850間名店。怪不得王英偉博士會形容說:「澳門巴黎人,是自從創辦澳門威尼斯人以後,金沙中國為澳門以至全世界創造的一個全新創舉!」

Dr. Wong has climbed to the top of many different industries in different places, but he is the first Chinese to head Sands China Ltd. as its president. He admits that there is no other position like this one, bringing a huge sense of fulfillment with even greater challenges. A survey of tourists conducted last year showed that The Venetian Macao, which opened in 2007, is the second most visited place in Macau after the ruins of Saint Paul. Dr. Wong believes that The Parisian Macao will become the third most visited place. The Parisian Macao combines many businesses in one. It’s not just the integrated resort that’s attractive, but all the other surrounding facilities and services that will come with it including Aqua World, a water park. Plus, more than 150 internationally-known “affordable luxury” brand stores and restaurants with 850 stores all accessible via air-conditioned walkways connecting to other shopping malls.

變換身分的指揮棒

金沙中國一直以來均由外國人擔任總裁,究竟王英偉博士有何強項,可以坐上首位華人總裁的寶座呢?能夠執掌這根統領者的指揮棒,當然靠着他的拼勁本色 ,以及他過人的管理哲學與智慧。可以打破這個遊戲規則,說來其實離不開香港人那份勇於自我挑戰的本色。

「我喜歡不斷挑戰自己,我慣於做統籌的角色,很多時我上面只有主席一人可以給我意見,所以慣於以及勇於做決策;我覺得做決策這回事,對與錯不是最重要,重要的是要有承擔,如果出錯或受責備的話也不要緊,最重要的是肯自己出來承擔責任,這就是作為一個管理層最重要的技術思維。」

從王英偉博士口中講述的管理哲學,帶着點東方兵法的味道,領導者隨時審時度勢變換身分。他侃侃而談如何作為一個領導者角色,眉宇間充滿昂然自信。

「我作為整個團隊的領軍人,一定要做好以下三個角色:首先,我是一個團隊的統帥,要在各種順境與逆境時,善於安排陣營及重新排陣,選擇適當的人才肩負適合的工作。其次,我也要擔當一個啦啦隊長的角色,要時刻懂得欣賞團隊中有突出表現的人,為團隊打打氣。最後,我也要扮演家長的角色,對有需要的員工提供額外的關懷和支持。」

王英偉博士貴為統帥,他仍能以「管家和保姆」的接地氣姿態,上任總裁不久就忙於為各階層的員工謀求更佳的福利,例如:給低層的員工加薪,對有優良表現的員工經常作出嘉許,對家庭出了狀況的員工又作出各種恩恤;他甚至為了讓員工有更好的工作環境,把辦公室背後的一個天井徹底改頭換面,變為一個雅緻的花園。

貴為最高統帥,他又不辭勞苦親自下區走訪澳門各個社團和非牟利機構。「因為我要讓外界了解金沙中國集團在社會的參與,能為澳門市民提供的機會、員工培訓等情況 。我覺得一間企業除了要經營得好,也是要給外間的人了解,並且獲得社會的認同,這才是一個好的企業。」

能夠作為一個統領數萬員工的企業領頭人物,除了在管理上散發濃濃的人情味,敢於「求新求變」當然也是王英偉博士的優勢。

「我的總裁角色最重要是為企業帶來生命力與火花。我的其中一個優勢,亦正是我本來不屬於這個行業,所以,很多時看事情往往跟行內人的看法或做法有點不同,別人理所當然的一些做法,我反而會問為甚麼要這樣做?為甚麼不嘗試用另一些方法去做?用另一種角度去思考?就是這樣,反而會為企業帶來一些新火花和新動力!」

大概正是這份永遠「求新求變」的追求與膽量,令王英偉博士跟同樣是敢於「創新創奇」的金沙中國一拍即合!

How did Dr. Wong manage to become the first Chinese president of Sands China? “I like to constantly challenge myself. I’m used to a coordinating role. Most of the time, there’s only the Chairman above me, so I dare to make decisions. In making decisions, being right or wrong is not the most important thing. What’s most important is whether you’re willing to take responsibility for the consequences of the decision. That’s the most important quality of someone in management.”

Dr. Wong’s management philosophy is akin to The Art of War. He believes leaders need to be able to read the situation and change their roles accordingly. “As the commander of this group, I need to be able to fulfill three roles. First, I need to be the team leader. Whether in good times or bad, I need to be able to deploy the right people for the right jobs. I also need to be a cheerleader and show appreciation for outstanding performers. Finally, I also need to be a bit of a parent, and show my care and concern to employees with may need it.” Since becoming president, he has improved employee benefits and their working environment.

According to Dr. Wong, another quality of a leader is the courage to innovate and change. “One of my most important roles as president is to bring vitality and spark creativity in the organization.”

跟這位統領著數間度假村以及 27,000 名員工的 CEO 訪談,不但不需要正經八百,卻反而有如沐春風的輕鬆自在感;除了他的美式風趣幽默和從容不逼之外,王英偉博士最大的魅力,是在於他熱愛藝術和對藝術的鑒賞力。尤其是當他談到如何讓遊客賓至如歸、如何為遊客創造一個難忘的旅程經歷時,他的眼裏頓時閃出火花,談起來亦特別起勁,因為話題正是他最愛的範疇——藝術與表演。

王英偉博士一語中的地說:「要讓遊客有美好的體驗,並且想一再重溫、重臨舊地,我們要做的就是為他們『創造回憶』,而當中為遊客帶來窩心的娛樂及精采表演采,就正是創造回憶的不二法門。」

作為香港藝術發展局主席,兒子又是著名歌手與舞蹈家王梓軒 ,難怪王英偉博士一談到將來會把哪些世界級的表演藝術帶到集團旗下的酒店,他就樂孜孜地數算了多個讓人目眩神迷的藝術演出。對於如何讓表演藝術和娛樂作為度假文化的靈魂,王英偉博士已是成竹在胸,滿肚密圈。藝術愛好者配上「好客和好玩」的個性,這一切剛好就是度假文化決策人最寶貴的特質。

談到當前陰晴不定的澳門經濟前景,王博士依然信心滿滿。「人是很難跟大環境搏鬥的,但我可以做的,是不斷想辦法為團隊提高士氣,不斷提升服務質素和開拓服務的創意和創舉。」

作為第一個華人肩負起一個如此龐大國際綜合度假村品牌的使命,王英偉博士對「FIRST」這個字會有甚麼感想呢?他堅定地說出兩個字:「領先」。

「當然是敢於嘗試,敢於領先,事實上,我們大型品牌若然也不敢去創去闖、去做『FIRST』 ,小型企業又怎會敢於去創新呢?」敢於作為「FIRST」去開創新天新地,這正是王英偉博士能夠成為行業內真正「FIRST」的秘訣!

Speaking to the CEO of several integrated resorts employing 27,000 people is a surprisingly casual experience. Aside from a rather American sense of humor and a dynamic demeanor, Dr. Wong’s charm also comes from his love of art and the performing arts. When he talks about how to create unforgettable experiences for them, his eyes light up as the conversation naturally veers towards what he loves – art & performances.

“To create a wonderful experience for our guests, one they will want to relive again and again, we need to “create memories” for them. Offering spectacular entertainment and performances is the only way to do that.”

As the first Chinese to head up such a large international integrated resort brand, what does Dr. Wong think about the word “FIRST”? “Of course, we must dare to try, and have the courage to lead. If a large brand doesn’t have the courage to charge ahead, to be “FIRST”, how would a small business dare to innovate?” Having the courage to do what no one has done before, this is Dr. Wong’s secret to becoming a “FIRST” in the industry!
