There can be passionate travel like in summer even in the wintertime, though people usually think of the season as cold, snowy and lonesome. The sports activities in summer can bring a totally different and exciting experience in winter.
Ice Diving in Iceland
One can climb the mountain in winter, so what about diving? The world of ice and snow consists of various kinds of landforms. The emerald lake in summer has taken the shape of a hard plate in winter, but when you crack it open, a tranquil world under water will be revealed. Although the underwater animals are too lazy to greet, you can see the odd-shaped rift when you dive under the ice. Reach out and you will then touch the Eurasian and American Plates. This is what you can see when you are ice diving at Silfra rift in Thingvellir National Park, Iceland.
Silfra means “silver lady” in Icelandic. It is a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. With outstanding environment protection and nature conservation by the Iceland government, Silfra is the clearest water on earth with over 100m visibility underwater. The water temperature stays at 2℃ all year round, but it is not as cold as you think. So just put on a dry suit and carry a diving tank to start ice diving!
