The Beauty of Ceramic Treasures
Many would begin their cultural exploration in South Korea by visiting grandiose palaces or trying on traditional Han-bok. Indeed ceramics here are also famous, especially Baekja (white porcelain) and Buncheong (grayish bluepowdered celadon) during the Joeseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The method of making ceramics was also passed to Japan at that time.
Located in Gyeonggi-do area, Icheon Ceramics Village used to be the center of traditional pottery due to the easily obtainable materials in the area with official kiln’s tradition and the most fertile soil in the country. Nowadays there are about 80 pottery factories as well as approximately 300 pottery kilns in use in the village. You can observe the pottery production process, and admire the beauty of traditional Cheongja (celadon), Baekja and Buncheong antiques in the exhibition center. It is worthwhile to see the crafts of potters known as Living Cultural Treasures of Korea for creating the highest quality handicrafts. Modern design pottery from different countries are also exhibited. You may also purchase modern fine pottery products directly in the village, or join the pottery-making class. Each year the internationally acclaimed “Icheon Ceramics Festival” is held in April and May, during which ceramic treasures are unveiled, promoting traditional Korean cultures to the world.
The Magic of Fairy Tales
Once upon a time, when Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village in Incheon was no more than an ordinary housing area. However, young people began to move out, leaving the village dilapidated. The community then decided to start a renovation project – redecorating the village and turning it into a fairy tale town. They succeeded, bringing hoards of travelers to Songwol-dong.
Turning at any corner of any street in the village, you will find yourself in a classic fairy tale after just getting out of another one. Be that Cinderella or Alice in the Wonderland, or Tin Woodman from The Wizard of Oz – you will meet characters not only from western novels, but also from traditional Korean stories. Apart from wall paintings, sculptures such as a giant Pinocchio, Bambi, etc. can also be found. Amazing photo spots are everywhere, including the famous rainbow stairs and the lamp posts transformed into cute animals. There are a couple of cafes, shops and bakeries within the village should you wish to take a break.

The Style of Hipster Chic
If you are already tired of Bukchon Hanok Village and Samcheong-dong, maybe you should try out strolling in the new hipster heaven, Ikseon-dong. Ikseon-dong’s Hanok Village was first established in the 1920s. It used to be outshone by other well-known attractions, but in recent years many young artists and entrepreneurs have been moving in, opening artistic craft shops and boutiques, making this area an extremely popular “photo zone” as well as a hot dating spot. The twists and turns of narrow alleys are lined with stylish shops and cafes, including Madang Flower Café which is the filming location of Korean TV dramas such as “Goblin” and “Black Knight”. There are cardboard cutouts and photos of these TV dramas, as well as potted plants and dried flowers at the gate. The craft beer brew house from Chicago, Goose Island Beer Co. also attracts many youngsters. The goose standing at the door is eye-catching; and furthermore, it is simply a nice place to relax with friends and enjoy great craft beers on a lazy afternoon.
The Glamour of Modern Designs
Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DPP) at the center of Seoul is a multicultural complex designed to be the world’s No. 1 Ground Zero for design and fashion industries. Listed by “The New York Times” as one of “Top 52 Places to Visit in 2015”, DPP is comprised of five halls: Art Hall, Museum, Design Lab, Design Market, and Dongdaemun History and Culture Park. Life is Art.” exhibition from now till 17 March honoring the Americanartist Keith Haring.
When the night falls, thousands of LED roses will automatically light up, transforming the place into a romantic nocturnal garden and providing a great spot for nightscape photography.
